When does the project begin?

Trout and salmon breed around Christmas time each year. Applications for next seasons hatchery program should reach us by September/October at the latest. The equipment is delivered immediately after the Christmas holiday, the eggs will follow a week or so later.

Would our school be eligible for a hatchery unit?

If you have a river in your area in which trout or salmon either presently exist or may soon return, you would be eligible to take part. Your local Environment Agency can help you with this information.

How difficult is the process?

To date more than twenty hatchery units have been located in schools within the Wandle Valley in classes of all age groups. All but one have continued the project for the last three years. The system is teacher and child friendly but will require an element of care and supervision. The children usually take over after the first week very confidently. If any problems occur help will be quickly available on a dedicated helpline.
